Sentient Developments: The Fermi Paradox: Back with a vengeance. This article is partly adapted from my Trans. Vision 2. 00. 7 presentation, “Whither ET? What the failing search for extraterrestrial intelligence tells us about humanity's future.”The Fermi Paradox is alive and well. As our sciences mature, and as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence continues to fail, the Great Silence becomes louder than ever. The seemingly empty cosmos is screaming out to us that something is askew. Our isolation in the Universe has in no small way shaped and defined the human condition. It is such an indelible part of our reality that it is often taken for granted or rationalized to extremes. To deal with the cognitive dissonance created by the Great Silence, we have resorted to good old fashioned human arrogance, anthropocentrism, and worse, an inter- galactic inferiority complex. We make excuses and rationalizations like, . Our sciences are steadily maturing and we are discovering more and more that our isolation in the cosmos and the dearth of observable artificial phenomenon is in direct violation of our expectations, and by consequence, our own anticipated future as a space- faring species. Indeed, one of the greatest philosophical and scientific challenges that currently confronts humanity is the unsolved question of the existence of extraterrestrial intelligences (ETI's). We have yet to see any evidence for their existence. It does not appear that ETI’s have come through our solar system; we see no signs of their activities in space; we have yet to receive any kind of communication from them. Adding to the Great Silence is the realization that they should have been here by now - - the problem known as the Fermi Paradox. The Fermi Paradox. The Fermi Paradox is the contradictory and counter- intuitive observation that we have yet to see any evidence for the existence of ETI’s. The size and age of the Universe suggests that many technologically advanced ETI’s ought to exist. However, this hypothesis seems inconsistent with the lack of observational evidence to support it. Largely ignored in 1.

Enrico Fermi famously asked, “Where is everybody,” and virtually dismissed at the seminal SETI conference in 1. Michael Hart in 1. Here are some reasons why. Our Universe contains about 1. And this is what exists right now; there have been a billion trillion stars in our past Universe. The Milky Way Galaxy formed a mere 2. Galaxy nearly as old as the Universe itself. Work by Charles Lineweaver has shown that planets also began forming a very long time ago; he places estimates of Earth- like planets forming 9 billion years ago (Gyr). According to Lineweaver, the median age of planets in the Galaxy is 6. Gyr which is significantly more than the Earth’s age. An average terrestrial planet in the Galaxy is 1. Gyr older than the Earth. It is estimated that three quarters of earth- like planets in the Galactic habitable zone are older than the Earth. We have a growing conception of where habitation could be sustained in the Galaxy. The requirements are a host star that formed between 4 to 8 Gyr ago, enough heavy elements to form terrestrial planets, sufficient time for biological evolution, an environment free of sterilization events (namely super novae), and an annular region between 7 and 9 kiloparsecs from the galactic center that widens with time. Most of these are so- called “hot Jupiters,” but the possibility that their satellites could be habitable cannot be ruled out. Many of these systems have stable circumstellar habitable zones. Somewhat shockingly, the first Earth- like planet was discovered earlier this year orbiting the red star Gilese 5. Earth, is suspected to have water and an atmosphere, and its temperature fluctuates between 0 and 4. Celsius. Life emerged quickly thereafter 3 Gyr ago. Some estimates show that life emerged in as little as 6. The Earth itself has been a potentially infectious agent for nearly 3 billion years. Evidence has emerged that some grains of material in our solar system came from beyond our solar system. Recent experiments show that microorganisms can survive dormancy for long periods of time and under space conditions. We also now know that rocks can travel from Mars to Earth. Biological diversity is probably much larger than conventionally assumed. Developing conception of a biophilic Universe in which the cosmological parameters for the existence of life appear finely tuned. As scientists delve deeper and deeper into the unsolved mysteries of the Universe, they are discovering that a number of cosmological parameters are excruciatingly specific. So specific, in fact, that any minor alteration to key parameters would throw the entire Universe off kilter and result in a system completely unfriendly to life. The parameters of the Universe that are in place are so specific as to almost suggest that spawning life is in fact what the Universe is supposed to do. There has also been the growing acceptance of Neo- Darwinism. Advances in computer science have reshaped our conception of what is possible from an informational and digital perspective. There is the growing acceptance of systems theories which take emergent properties and complexity into account. Game theory and the rise of rational intelligence add another level to this dynamic mix. Development of sociobiological observations as they pertain to the rapid evolution of intelligent life and the apparent radical potential for advanced intelligence. Exponential change. Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns. Steady advances in information technologies. Artificial intelligence. Cybernetics, and so on. And then there is the theoretic potential for a technological Singularity, digital minds, artificial superintelligence, molecular nanotechnology, and other radical possibilities. There is also emerging speculation about the feasibility of interstellar travel, colonization and communication. In other words. The Universe and the Milky Way are extremely old, our galaxy has been able to produce rocky planets for quite some time now, and our earth is a relative new- comer to the galaxy. The composition of our solar system and the Earth itself may not be as rare as some astronomers and astrobiologists believe. These discoveries are a serious blow to the Rare Earth Hypothesis – the idea that the genesis, development and proliferation of life is an extremely special event. It’s also a blow to Brandon Carter’s anthropicargument which takes a very human- centric approach to understanding cosmology, suggesting that our existence as observers imposes the sort of Universe that only we can observe. Finally, the Universe appears capable of spawning radically advanced intelligence – the kind of advanced intelligence that transhumanists speculate about, namely post- Singularity, post- biological machine minds. Given intelligent life's ability to overcome scarcity, and its tendency to colonize new habitats, it seems likely that any advanced civilization would seek out new resources and colonize first their star system, and then surrounding star systems. Indeed, estimates place the time to colonize the Galaxy anywhere from one million to 1. We should be living in a Galaxy that is saturated with intelligence and highly organized. Thus, it may be assumed that intelligent life is rare, or, given our seemingly biophilic Universe, our assumptions about the general behaviour of intelligent civilizations are flawed. A paradox is a paradox for a reason: it means there’s something wrong in our thinking. So, where is everybody? Part II: The Fermi Paradox: Advanced Civilization Do Not.. The following script is from “6. Minutes Presents: Barack Obama: Eight Years in the White House,” which aired on Jan. Steve Kroft is the correspondent. Welcome to “6. 0 Minutes Presents.” Tonight, President Barack Obama looks back at eight years in the White House. His failures and what he learned from his two terms as the nation’s chief executive and commander- in- chief. We first met him 1. U. S. His last name rhymed with “Osama.” And his middle name was Hussein. He was half black, half white, and in terms of political experience, very green. President Barack Obama: Steve Kroft. Steve Kroft: Hey! We sat down with President Obama Monday afternoon in the State Dining Room at the White House. It marked our 1. 2th and final interview with him since he was elected president. We began by showing him a picture. From left: 6. 0 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft, President Barack Obama and producer L. Franklin Devine, 2. I got to say that I feel as if I couldn’t take this kind of Chicago winter right now. It was taken Super Bowl Sunday 2. South Side of Chicago - - one of the last times he could walk a street without attracting a big crowd, unencumbered by Secret Service or an entourage. That’s my mother- in- law’s house, that block, I think. Steve Kroft: Nobody around, nobody. Nobody cared. President Barack Obama: They didn’t. How about that? He was an audaciously hopeful junior senator from Illinois, splitting his time between his tiny apartment in Washington and the Chicago home where he had two young daughters. Steve Kroft: What else does he make besides tuna fish? Malia Obama: Chili, and that’s it. Trump won the White House with an outsider’s populist promise to “drain the swamp” of Washington. Now, as he prepares to.
His wife was a working mom, a hospital executive and major breadwinner in the family. She wasn’t crazy about her husband being in politics. Steve Kroft: Has it put strains on the marriage from time to time? Michelle Obama: Oh, no. Sen. Obama: Absolutely, it has. Steve Kroft: But you’d let him go ahead and do this? Michelle Obama: I think if I weren’t married to him, I’d want him to be in there. So I don’t want to stand in the way of that because we have to work out a few things. We’ve had those arguments and. Obama: And I’ve lost them all. Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft and President Barack Obama. CBS News. It all seems like a long time ago. Steve Kroft: So what’s the difference between this guy and the guy you are now? How much smarter are you than this guy standing on the street corner? President Barack Obama: Well, let’s see. Obviously I’m grayer, a few more wrinkles. You know I’ll be honest with you, Steve. One of the things I’m proud about is that I think my basic character and outlook actually have not changed much. And people who are closest to me will tell you that the guy who came here is the same guy who’s leaving. And the reason I take pride for that is one of the things you worry about when you’re in the bubble, and there’s all this pomp and circumstance and hail to the chief is, do you lose touch with what you thought was important and what brought you here? And I’m proud that I don’t think I have lost touch. Steve Kroft: If you had to write a brief description of this job beginning with wanted- - how would you describe the position? And what are the tasks? And what skills do you think you need? President Barack Obama: Thick skin helps. Steve Kroft: Thick skin, stamina.“People who are closest to me will tell you that the guy who came here is the same guy who’s leaving.” President Obama. President Barack Obama: Stamina. There is a greater physical element to this job than you would think, just being able to grind it out. And I think your ability to not just mentally and emotionally, but physically be able to say, “We got this. We’re going to be OK.”Steve Kroft: Did you learn the executive stuff on the job? Because when we first talked, I must have asked you 1. Your only executive experience was running the Harvard Law Review and running your own campaign. Did you have to learn a lot of this on the job? President Barack Obama and 6. Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft. CBS News. President Barack Obama: The campaign was a more significant training ground than I think people give it credit for. By the time I got here, I think I had a pretty good sense of what was required. But the circumstances in which I came in were different than most executives, right? The enterprise was in the midst of a major crisis. And so, those first six months were a fire drill. Beside the two wars he inherited in Iraq and Afghanistan, and promised to end, a financial crisis at home had pushed the United States to the brink of another Great Depression. When we spoke with the new president in March of 2. Politically pummeled from all sides, Obama did his best to keep a sense of humor. President Obama: I just want to say that the only thing less popular than putting money into banks is putting money into the auto industry. So- -Steve Kroft: But 1. President Obama: It’s not a high number. Steve Kroft: You’re sitting here and you’re- - you are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, “I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money- -” How do you deal with that? President Obama: No, no, no. Steve Kroft: I mean, wha- - explain the- - the- - the- -President Obama: Well- -Steve Kroft: The mood in your laughter. President Obama: Yeah, I mean, there’s gotta be- -Steve Kroft: Are you punch- drunk? President Obama: No, no, there’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day. President Barack Obama participates in a 6. Minutes interview with Steve Kroft in the State Dining Room of the White House, Jan. Steve Kroft: Is there anything that surprised you about this job? President Barack Obama: I was surprised and continue to be surprised by the severity of partisanship in this town. And I think that I’d been warned about it. You’ll remember, in the campaign back in 2. Oh, he’s being na. He thinks that there’s no red states and blue states. I did not expect, particularly in the midst of crisis, just how severe that partisanship would be. Steve Kroft: You came into this office trying to unify the country. You said that many times during the campaign. You wanted to bring people together. You wanted to change Washington. You talked about transformative change. And you became the focal point for some of the division. I could not be prouder of the track record we’ve put together. By almost every measure, the country is significantly better off than when I came in. If you can look back and say, “The economy’s better. Our security’s better. The environment’s better. Our kids’ education is better,” if you can say that you’ve made things better, then considering all the challenges out there, you should feel good. But I’m the first to acknowledge that I did not crack the code in terms of reducing this partisan fever. Steve Kroft: You didn’t change Washington. President Barack Obama: You know, I changed those things that were in direct- - my direct control. I mean, I- - look, I’m proud of the fact that, with two weeks to go, we’re probably the first administration in modern history that hasn’t had a major scandal in the White House. In that sense, we changed some things. I would’ve liked to have gotten that one last Supreme Court justice in there. I’d like the Supreme Court to take a look at- -Steve Kroft: You couldn’t even get a hearing. President Barack Obama participates in a 6. Minutes interview with Steve Kroft in the Oval Office of the White House, Jan. Trying to get the other side of the aisle to work with us on issues, in some cases, that they professed, originally, an interest in, and saying to them, “Hold on a second. You guys used to think this was a good idea. Now, just because I’m supporting it, you can’t change your mind.” But they did. And what that did, I think, made me appreciate. And I’ve said this before. But it’s worth repeating. Because this is on me. Part of the job description is also shaping public opinion. And we were very effective, and I was very effective, in shaping public opinion around my campaigns. But there were big stretches, while governing, where even though we were doing the right thing, we weren’t able to mobilize public opinion firmly enough behind us to weaken the resolve of the Republicans to stop opposing us or to cooperate with us. And there were times during my presidency where I lost the PR battle. And losing the PR battles, particularly about healthcare, translated into losing his Democratic majorities in Congress, beginning with a Republican landslide in the midterm election of 2. Steve Kroft: There is this feeling in- - particularly among people who are among your hardened supporters—President Obama: Right. Steve Kroft: - -who feel a little disappointed that they think that you’ve lost your mojo. That you’ve lost your ability, that touch you had during the campaign to inspire—President Obama: Yeah. Steve Kroft: - - and lead that- - you know, everybody in Washington writes about the sort of aloofness that you have and I`m sure that drives you crazy. That you’ve let other people define you, that you haven`t sold your successes well enough? President Obama: I think it`s a fair argument, you know, I think that over the course of two years we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that we stopped paying attention to the fact that, you know leadership isn’t just legislation, that it’s a matter of persuading people and giving them confidence, and bringing them together and setting a tone. For the next six years, there would be legislative gridlock, and by 2. Obama for change were looking somewhere else. Steve Kroft: Donald Trump, if you take away the particulars, was elected to the office, basically, on the same program that you were, of change. He wants to change Washington. President Barack Obama: Well, I mean that’s a lot of particulars you’re taking away. Fair enough. Steve Kroft: But do you think- -President Barack Obama: He was a change candidate. Share how Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, who captivated me, in a small chapel in London, 4. I am now and continues to shape and energize my life, thought and ministry, convincing me that there is a critical relationship between Eucharist and justice. Don't let a billion lives fade away. If we can change 8 peoples minds, we can transform 8. Is it meant to reach beyond the membership to the whole world? Has it something to say about the impact that economic globalization has on the poor? Is there something in the dynamic of the Eucharistic celebration that can inform globalization and make it more human, inclusive and sustainable? Does the Eucharist offer a paradigm for sharing the earths goods and building community? Can it provide a language that can be used by institutions and man and women of good will to address the problem of the alleviation of poverty? Can it enable the poor to make globalization work for them too? Has a Eucharistic reflection on globalization and the poor something to say to us Catholics about the way we celebrate and live Eucharist? About bridging the gap between the theory of Eucharist as a project of solidarity for all humanity iii and our sacramental practice which is often disconnected from reality? Is Jorge Costadoats comment an indictment of us all: Many ask how it is in Latin America that the rich and poor both receive the same body of Christ in communion, but fail to make this region the most just in the whole world? Can our Eucharistic celebrations overflow with a passion for justice. Can they create a context in which there can be a fusion of horizons v between globalization and world poverty? Obviously it would be impossible to answer even one of these questions in 3. Eucharist as it is meant to be. Dimensions that can offer an exciting program of reflection during the Year of the Eucharist and a challenge to our liturgical creativity, while re- passioning us about the social implications of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is essentially integrated into reality. Diaz Mateos, SJ, writes: The Eucharist should have the dimensions that God meant for it: the life of the world. For that reason, the Eucharist impacts daily life. It is alive with a vibrant relation to the existence and struggles of all women and men, everywhere, especially the huge majority, who are poor. How do we make our Eucharistic celebrations more alive and relevant? More about real people, not reduced to a private, spiritual experience, lost in rubrics(Cf. Godfrey Diekman OSB, made an entry in his diary, during Vat II., 1. O God who through the Order of Rubricists has impeded the way to heaven for us, we pray that you give us another way to eternal life! Then that's it for a week. Or just minor changes of external nature, a few more hymns an extra petition or two. But rather a deeper orientation required by a Eucharistic community that is both reflective and action- orientated, leading to the development of a Eucharistic spirituality, shared by priests and people. The Eucharist is about the resources of the earth and basic human needs. The Eucharist is about food. The words of the Offertory, that speak of bread which earth has given and human hands have made and wine, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, are an on- going challenge to the creativity of our celebrations and the authenticity of our commitment to feed the world and to social justice in a world of agricultural subsidies and sweat shops. For those Eucharistic words, are pregnant with meaning and embrace a whole host of issues around poverty, bringing together those who have and those who have not. The rich and the poor; the richest and the poorest. The Offertory also plunges us into the world of work, both remunerated labor and utter exploitation. There's a whole conversation there about work. It also initiates a conversation about land: of those who possess it and those who have been dispossessed, forced off their land, for example, by subsidized grain imports. The Australian Bishops speak about the wheat that makes our Eucharistic bread, grown on land owned by others. In developing countries they speak of wine which is always the work of hands in Spain, France, Cyprus or California! In BBC WORLD I read about the indigenous leaders in southern Argentina . At the same time, the Offertory sets us against the backdrop of the whole of creation, present in the symbols of bread and wine, while initiating another conversation around an economic ecology that brings together thanksgiving for creation and reaching out to the poor, while leaving us with the question: Is our bread and wine costing us the very earth itself? The list of topics is endless. The opportunities for thought mind- boggling. Ideas for celebration awesome. In the early Church, there was a close relationship between the Offertory and the care of the needy. Collection of contributions for orphans, widows, the sick and those in any kind of need. How can we refresh and nurture that relationship in our own Eucharistic celebrations during the procession and presentation of the gifts? Instead of the blessed mutter or an offertory drowned out by a hymn that has nothing to do with gifts : Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling for you to come home Displaced by the collection. Because of its scope the Offertory also has the power to convoke all those who care. Those of any creed or none. Those of every race and nation. Liturgists, poets, social activists : First let there be bread, and then freedom. Freedom with hunger is a flower placed on a corpse. Where there is bread, there is God. Rice is heaven, says the Asian poet; the earth is a gigantic plate of rice, a huge loaf of bread, ours for the hunger of all. God becomes bread, work for the poor, says the prophet Gandhi. The Bible is a menu of fraternal bread. Jesus is the living Bread. The universe is our table, brothers and sisters. It is always richer and deeper; always more than we can ever imagine or dream. It is a project, a prophetic word spoken and celebrated from east to west x; an action concerned with the unity of the whole human race. In the same way, the issue of global hunger leads beyond the Eucharistic table to embrace the whole human family. For that reason, the Eucharist provides a commentary on policies of exclusion like the recent failure by the IMF and the World Bank to alter the bank and funds voting structure and board composition, to include more representatives from developing countries around the table of the institutions. It also fosters the emerging global consensus on poverty. The Eucharist is also about communion and eating together. It is about widening the tent and extending the table; making the table communal and, therefore, round; - no top and no bottom; no sides - a table as big as the whole world. As the words of consecration remind us: This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all Let us remember too that the majority of those all are not Catholics, just as the majority of Gods poor are outside the Christian Churches. For the Eucharistic community is not to be identified only with the people at church today; we are being constituted as a community to come. It is a case of reading and re- reading the episcles, the calling down of the Holy Spirit on us all. The Eucharist is essentially about solidarity and sharing. The Eucharist, the Pope tells us, is a project of solidarity. Samuel Rayan SJ., develops the theme in poetry : Rice is for sharing; bread must be broken and given. Every bowl, every belly shall have its fill, To leave a single bowl unfilled is To rob history of its meaning; To grab many a bowl for myself is to empty history of God. Are we like the Christians in Corinth who gathered for Eucharist but left the poor without food? The Pope goes on to say: It is the impulse which the Eucharist gives to the community for a practical commitment to building a more just and fraternal society. It provides a strategy for shaping a more equitable society. A society that is no longer based on the individual but on solidarity in which the efforts of the poor and the rich are combined. The Eucharist constitutes a call to humanize globalization, taking poverty out of the context of economic indicators, statistics and categories and giving it a human face. It is about people and about relationships. About re- defining the world according to people not profit. The Eucharistic words: This is my body personalize the Eucharist and make us one. Paul tells that because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we partake of the one loaf. I experienced this in a very moving way while I was living and working in a shanty town in Santiago de Chile. One afternoon, as I was about to go to the chapel for Eucharistic adoration, an elderly grandfather, came to the door to ask if someone could take his blood pressure. I took his blood pressure, we chatted over a cup of tea, Chilean style, and, eventually, he toddled happily away. La Madre - 2. 75 Photos & 2. Reviews - Bars - Calle San Francisco 3. Dia De La Madre ImagenesThere is nothing I miss more!!! Stumbled across this place because of the gorgeous ally way! Told my husband I didn't care I had to sit and eat there! Didn't care if this place was good or not. Best choice we made we made that day!!!! God they were so good!!!! They tasted so legit and freshly made! Reminded me of home cooked meals my mom would make us for breakfast!! The service was good as well too. I loved this place so much we came back for dinner! Their queso fonded was so delicious! In the morning I had a mimosa so when we returned for dinner decided to get a mojito. I grow my own mints at home and took a class on how to make good mojitos! I have to say their mojitos were so refreshing and you could actually taste the mint! The La Madre Mountains Wilderness Area is one of the largest wilderness areas (47,180 acres) in southern Nevada. A mi madre en ese mar tan lleno de emociones que llaman juventud, yo alcancé a descubrir tu faz profética mostrándome el deber y la virtud. Perfect! I went a few days ago when I was on vacation in PR. I went on a Saturday night. It took a very long time before we were seated and they were not terribly busy. We went to the bar first, and it took a while to get any drink service. The duck was very well done. The downside was it took well over 1 hour for our appetizers to even come out. They had forgotten to even put that in, and didn't bother to tell me. I'm beginning to think that these people are used to Taco Bell. Seriously, the food is average at best. I ordered chilaquiles, and it was really sweet which I found odd in a Mexican restaurant. The corn tortilla chips were extremely soggy and greasy. I asked for hot sauce because these tacos were also sweet, and their hot sauce wasn't hot at all. I was very gracious about it, and said . It was so delicious!!!! I got it on the rocks, but you can also get it blended instead. I was also told when I went that you can request chocolate on top too. I didn't, but I'm sure it would taste just like an almond joy! Just thinking about this margarita again makes me want to book another trip to PR!!! It was so creamy and decedent! If you don't eat here at least try the margaritas! Ask for some extra cilantro and a side of jalape. There were 8 of us, but they were still able to accommodate us without a wait (it was a Sunday night). It's not really traditional Mexican by any means- -more of a hipster twist on Mexican food. The margaritas were all delicious (the pineapple was kind of strong, though)- -especially the coconut margarita. The food took a little while, we were all mostly 2- 3 drinks in by that time.. That was probably my biggest complaint- -followed by the awkward tiny bathroom that is slightly elevated and difficult to manage when tipsy. So then I ordered an aji tuna salad, too, which was also very good. I hadn't had vegetables all trip in PR, so this was refreshingly different. The corn on the cob could've been cooked a little longer (I like mine super soft), but the seasoning and cheese on it was good. The desserts were OKAY, nothing too special for me. The food is delicious, their churrasco is one of the absolute best in El Viejo San Juan, and the staff goes out of their way for their customers. Ali is an amazing chef with very good taste. Sara, Claudia, and Isabel were super friendly and helpful. I wish I could eat there everyday! It definitely did not disappoint! The service is pretty awesome! I made sure I came back with my friends so they can enjoy the food and drinks at La Madre. I was so anxious to eat I forgot to take a picture! La Madre is really just ok. I don't think it's anything too special though but it may be what we ordered. The service was terrible, we waited 4. Didn't have much flavor or spice. Just a big bowl of melted cheese with some pick in it. The fish was fried, and just OK. Pretty flavorful just a tad bit dry. There a way more phenomenal restaurants in Old San Juan that I would rather go to. This place was recommended by a staff at Da House hotel. It's just across street and the reviews online were great so I had to try. Glad I did cause I came here twice during my trip. Second drink was guava margarita. I was a bit hungry but wanted something small. Bartender recommended the Mini Ahi Tuna Tacos. Fresh tuna and veggies and loved the house made hot sauce! The brunch menu looked hearty and that's what were in the mood for. I got the Tortilla Madre (egg omelet, onions, peppers, cilantro filled with pork and covered with fresh tomato sauce and sour cream). We also had mimosas made with freshly squeezed fruits. They take their time to prep food and drinks here but patience has its rewards. I highly recommend to anyone who visits OSJ. Outstanding service, fresh mexican inspired food, well crafted cocktails and also reasonably priced. We liked this place so much, we went twice in 3 days. Lots of variety on the menu too, from classic dishes to unique offerings. And their margaritas are tasty, varied, and also well priced- the coconut is like dessert in a glass, and the saril flower was unique and flavorful. The service was *painfully* slow. It took 5. 0 min to get our food and then we waited another 2. Wow. Asked for help and recommendations and got it with the right attitude. Guac, cheese fondue, corn and bean soup, pork chop .. I anticipated. Served just in time and with the right involvement from the staff. Lime margaritas on the rocks were good. Mango margaritas ok but a bit short on flavor. Every trip we go back and always walk away saying we can't wait to come back. Every time I'm in Old San Juan, I make a point to have dinner here and enjoy their Sesame- Crusted Seared Tuna served on top of a Fresh Black Bean & Corn Salad - - it's a refreshing dish! I also love the hip vibe and the fact that they are open until very late. I've been a fan and am glad to see that they continue to thrive! Try the Elote, Queso . I'm not a drinker but rumor has it that their Coconut Margarita is a winner and.. What an experience! My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here. We ordered the Vegetarian burrito and Chilaqueles for our entrees. The vegetarian burrito is quite possibly the best burrito I have had had in my life and that is something for a burrito which wasn't the kind you could eat with without utensils. The Mexican chef uses Asian influence to include Eggplant and soy and sweet sauce glazed Tofu along with a generous serving of Monterrey around the burrito. I am not sure what it is that made the tomato sauce so wonderful in flavor; there was a taste of the fresh tomato with a hint of sweetness. The star of the show again was the sauce. And, while as an American I am used to big portions, the entrees were more than filling for our empty stomachs. The cheesecakes were filled into fried tortillas reminding of a texture and flavor I generally associate with Thai fried ice cream. Fish tacos. I won't end this review there, but I probably could. If you walked into La Madre and only uttered those two delicious words, you'd have a guaranteed good time. An order comes with three, but because two is plenty I reccomend throwing in another dish and splitting with someone. We also ordered the carne taquitos which were meaty and delicious. Before three on a weekend the menu mainly consists of egg dishes. I wish there had been more lunch choices, but again, we really enjoyed what we ate so it was fine. To wash everything down I ordered a strawberry mojito which had a ton of fresh strawberry pieces and fresh mint. Prices aside, this was a fabulous place to grab some grub and a cool drink after a hot and sweaty day of San Juan touring. We had a lime mojito, a saril flower margarita with no salt rim and the grilled chimichangas with chicken app. Drinks were delicious and the chimichanga were the best I've ever had. Service was great. Visited Puerto Rico for vacation. This was my favorite meal. I got a chicken enchilada and it was delicious. I'm really picky about my Margherita, and I really enjoyed the marg from here. Good place that lured us in with the call of Mexican food and queso. Staff was very friendly and made some nice margaritas, and offered their two cents on the menu. I actually ended up leaving my credit card here by accident and came back an hour after dinner to get it. Our server was ready for me and had it ready to go which was awesome. Needed some more spice or pico on top but really good. So glad we stopped here. The coffee was excellent. Super nice people & great service. Pleasant atmosphere too. Crab cakes were not greasy at all, steak so- so, waitress aloof but nice, great setting on pedestrian cobblestone street. Reasonably priced and centrally located without being overly crowded. |
